Independent Press · Pacific Northwest
Hidden literary treasures, brought to light.
Understory Editions translates and publishes exceptional works from Korea and Japan — books that deserve to be read in every language.
Our Mission
Stories that cross borders
Founded in the Pacific Northwest, Understory Editions is dedicated to bridging literary cultures. We believe that extraordinary books shouldn't be limited by the language they were written in.
Every title we publish receives our complete editorial attention — from the first rights conversation to the final printed page. We work closely with translators, authors, and cultural consultants to ensure the original voice doesn't just survive translation, but thrives in it.
Korean Literature
A golden moment
Han Kang's Nobel Prize in Literature marked a turning point — a signal to the world of what Korean readers have known for decades. The depth of Korean literary culture, from philosophy to memoir to fiction, remains largely untranslated. We are here to change that.
Japanese Literature
The invisible shelf
Japan is the world's third-largest book market, yet fewer than three Japanese nonfiction titles are translated into English each year. Behind that invisible shelf are ideas, stories, and ways of thinking that English readers are missing entirely.
Our List
